Bloomfield Councilwoman Janice Maly has received praise from residents for keeping her promise to solve the speeding and aggressive driving problem in Bloomfield.

Maly who chairs the first ever township council Bloomfield Traffic Safety Committee has worked in concert with citizens and the police department to formulate a plan of action that includes educational signage that read; “25 MPH - SLOW DOWN...Little feet play on this street - Sponsored by: Janice Maly.”

The other aspect of Maly’s plan includes stepped up radar enforcement and engineering changes that will make traffic traveling through Bloomfield do so in a safer manner.

Maly warned, “Drivers beware - radar enforcement is here to stay in Bloomfield. Instead of taking a reactive approach to this problem, we have adopted a pro-active, no tolerance policy. The bottom line is if you speed in Bloomfield, you will be ticketed.”

According to Maly, since May, the Bloomfield Police have been setting up radar in trouble spots. The long range plan is to have a dedicated Traffic Safety Enforcement Unit within the Bloomfield Police Department whose only job will be to monitor and enforce traffic safety in the township.

Maly made sure funding was allocated for a new speed trailer that was recently put into use. The trailer is another educational tool in that it informs drivers of their speed as they approach, reminding them to slow down.

The engineering aspect of the traffic safety plan includes safety modifications at various intersections, new signage in the roadway and on poles, the proposal to study the feasibility of using speed tables or speed humps and making streets more narrow to force drivers to be more careful.

Maly’s Traffic Safety Committee meets in the evening at town hall. For meeting updates or to participate, please call Maly at 973-680-0274 or send her an email at Janice@JaniceMaly.com.
